Intel kembali merilis jajaran processor terbaru yang dinamakan Intel Core i7. Processor berbasis teknologi dengan kode “Nehalem” ini akan menjadi standar processor ditahun 2009. Belum jelas benar kenapa dinamakan Core i7, karena Intel sendiri belum mengumumkan alasan penamaan tersebut.

Ada beberapa teknologi yang membuatnya sangat berbeda dengan generasi sebelumnya, seperti Core 2 Quad. Walau sama-sama mengusung teknologi Core, tapi Intel merombak total arsitektur processor ini, yang ditunjukkan antara lain :

· Mengintegrasikan memory Controller langsung didalam processor. Sebelumnya memory Controller terletak pada chipset Motherboard (MCH). Dengan memory controller langsung didalam processor, maka transfer data antara processor & RAM akan meningkat secara signifikan.

· Menghilangkan fungsi FSB (Front Side Bus). Fungsi FSB digantikan dengan QPI (Quick Path Interconnect) yang mengubungkan sistem processor dan I/O Hub di chipset Motherboard.

· Menambahkan fungsi L3 cache, yang sebelumnya hanya dikenal pada Processor Server.

· Menggunakan sistem Smart Cache dengan share total. Dengan sistem ini, maka share cache memory akan semakin besar & efektif karena bisa digunakan dengan kapasitas penuh.

· Menggunakan teknologi Hyperthreading (HT) yang dulunya dikenal pada Pentium 4. Teknologi HT yang dipadukan dengan Core, akan menghasilkan Processor dengan 4 Core 8-threads. Secara umum sistem akan mengenali Core i7 sebagai processor 8 core (4 core riil, 4 core virtual dengan HT).

Intinya, Processor Core i7 sudah tidak bisa menggunakan sistem Motherboard lama. Saat ini Intel telah merilis chipset motherboard baru dengan nama X58 (yang mendukung Core i7). Motherboard yang telah beredar adalah tipe DX58SO.

Perbedan fisik Processor Core i7 dengan generasi sebelumnya :

* Menggunakan socket LGA1366 (Processor sebelumnya menggunakan LGA775).
* Menggunakan L3 Cache 8 MB (Processor sebelumnya hanya menggunakan L2 Cache).
* Menggunakan teknologi memory 3-channel (Processor sebelumnya menggunakan dual-channel).
* Mengadopsi teknologi RAM DDR3 (Processor sebelumnya menggunakan DDR2 saja).

Persamaan Processor Core i7 dengan generasi sebelumnya :

* Sama-sama menggunakan 4 core (Quad Core).
* Sama-sama menggunakan manufacture 45-nm.

Beberapa fitur pada Processor Core i7 :

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology (HT)

Sebelumnya teknologi HT sudah dikenal pada era Pentium 4. HT merupakan teknologi yang membuat thread (aliran data) pada Processor meningkat dua kali lipat, sehingga membuat pekerjaan multitasking akan semakin ringan. Ini seolah-olah processor memiliki core tambahan secara virtual.

Dengan HT, maka setiap core memiliki dua threads (dua aliran data) hingga secara total sebuah processor core i7 dikenali sebagai processor 8 core.

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology

Dengan fitur ini maka core processor secara otomatis meningkatkan frekuensi clock-speed jika diperlukan, asal masih dibawah limit power, arus & suhu temperatur yang diizinkan.

Sebagai contoh : pada saat user menggunakan satu aplikasi kelas berat yang membutuhkan speed tinggi (seperti Game), maka Turbo Boost akan mengaktifkan fiturnya agar dicapai speed maksimal secara dinamis sehingga aplikasi dapat dijalankan dengan nyaman.

Intel® Quick Path Interconnect

Pada dasarnya QPI berfungsi sama dengan FSB, tapi dengan pendekatan yang lebih baik. Pada FSB, jalur yang dihubungkan adalah transfer data antar Processor dan Memory Controller Hub (MCH), maka pada QPI yang dihubungkan adalah Processor dengan IOH (Input/Output Hub). IOH sendiri pengganti MCH pada sistem Core i7.

QPI meningkatkan kemampuan transfer sistem processor, karena menggabungkan controller memory langsung di Processor. Pada dasarnya QPI bukanlah sebuah bus layaknya FSB, tapi merupakan sistem point-to-point yang menghubungkan transfer data antara Processor ke RAM, dan Processor ke sistem eksternal (chipset IOH di Motherboard). Dengan QPI jumlah transfer data yang dapat dilakukan mencapai 4,8 Gigatransfer per-detik (atau disingkat 4,8 GT/s). Angka ini bisa disamakan dengan 25,6 GB/s transfer rate (Processor sebelumnya hanya sebesar 10,6 GB/s).

Integrated Memory Controller

Seperti yang telah diterangkan diatas, sistem Core i7 telah mengintegrasikan Memory Controller didalam sistem processornya, sehingga meningkatkan kemampuan transfer data secara signifikan.

8M Shared Intel® Smart Cache

Menggunakan L3 cache memory sebesar 8 MB total, sehingga membuat akses data semakin efisien & cepat. Pada sistem sebelumnya, cache pada Core 2 Quad dipecah menjadi dua (masing-masing melayani 2 core, bukan 4 core secara langsung) sehingga penggunaan kapasitas cache terbatas.
